Making markets work for the poor II – Enhancing sustainable income for vulnerable farmers in the Philippines

The notion behind the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach is that by addressing root causes – and not just symptoms – of underperformance of agricultural systems, more accessible and competitive market systems enable poor people to find their way out of poverty. A project run by Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation and its partners in the Philippines shows how the approach can work in practice in a fragile and challenging context. The aim was to enhance sustainable and scalable income for poor and vulnerable farmers in a region struck by Super Typhoon Haiyan.
